HISTORIC TRAIL

DACUKENG OLD TRAIL (大粗坑古道)

April 12, 2020November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is img_7659.jpg Now inhabited solely by stray dogs, the abandoned settlement of Dacukeng was once a thriving village supported by the profits of the area's abundant 'black gold' - coal. Climb the stairs to see what's left of this community, and then continue of to Jiufen for some well-earned snacks.

DATIELIAO OLD TRAIL to BAISHI SHAN and JINMIAN SHAN (打鐵寮古道/白石山/十三分山/金面山)

February 26, 2020November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales

This varied walk follows a beautiful reclaimed historic trail alongside a stream and then climbs to a ridge line with views over Taoyuan City as well as some of the county's more remote villages.

Although I’m dreading the return of summer temperatures and mosquitoes, this time of year is one I look forward to — it brings fireflies and tung blossom. I haven't been out on any firefly-watching expeditions yet, but in anticipation of the season, I've just added a new trail guide to the Taiwan Trails and Tales site. It covers a popular firefly viewing spot that I visited last year. Some 16x9 aspect ratio shots from a short stroll up to Pingjing Street this afternoon, where the second wave of cherry blossoms are very much still in bloom. Taiwan barbets (五色鳥) announcing the end of winter.

Note: Taiwan Trails and Tales has been going for over eight years now, so there are a fair few dead links and bits of information that need updating on the site. If you find one, I would greatly appreciate it if you let me know either by commenting on that post or by dropping me a line in the contact form (on the "About" page) so that I can remove or update it.
