NEIHU’S PATH LESS TRAVELLED

January 7, 2022November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

The hills around Jinmian Shan are crisscrossed with hiking trails of varying degrees of popularity and difficulty. This post details one of the quieter walks that you can do in the area.

ZHENGHAN TRAIL (鄭漢紀念步道)

December 17, 2021November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / 1 Comment

Zhenghan Trail is a short and easy trail that would be suitable for almost anyone. The walk climbs to an outlook which has a memorial to a local man and views over Miaoli’s Zhunan District.

FROG ROCK PARK COASTAL TRAIL (青蛙石海洋步道)

November 26, 2021November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

Frog Rock Coastal Trail is a short and easy walk just off the main drag of relaxed beach town, Kenting. As well as a tiny coral beach and coastal views, visitors can explore a beautiful replica of a traditional Minnan style village.

JINGUASHI AQUEDUCT TRAIL (山尖路步道)

November 12, 2021November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / 2 Comments

This short trail linking the two popular tourist villages of Jiufen and Jinguashi takes you past aqueducts that were used during the area's industrial past. It's a great way to stretch your legs after sampling the edible delights of Jiufen Old Street.

SANQING TEMPLE FOREST TRAIL WESTERN LOOP (三清宮森林步道西線)

October 29, 2021November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / 1 Comment

Spreading out from the central hub of Sanqing Temple are several trails known collectively as either Taoyuanli Forest Trail, or Sanqing Temple Forest Trail depending on where you look. This post covers the western side of Sanqing Forest Trail.

HUOYAN SHAN (火炎山)

October 22, 2021November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

Fire Mountain's flame-red slopes are an instantly recognisable landmark for motorists driving between Taichung and Miaoli. This formerly restricted nature reserve is home to a Minor 100 Peak, and has some of the most unique terrain that you're likely to find in Taiwan.

FEIFENG SHAN, ZHONGKENG SHAN and SHIBITAN SHAN LOOP (飛鳳山/中坑山/石壁潭山O型)

October 8, 2021November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / 3 Comments

This fun, half-day trail in Hsinchu County will take you to one of Taiwan's Minor 100 Peaks. There are a few scenic views along the way and you can even have the odd experience of seeing Taipei 101 from a different county.

NUANSHOU SHAN SINO-FRENCH WAR TRENCHES (暖壽山/清法戰爭古戰壕遺址)

September 24, 2021November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

This short trail in an overlooked corner of Keelung City will take you back in time to 1884 - when French and Qing soldiers fought for control of Taiwan.

TEA MOUNTAIN TRAIL (茶山步道)

September 21, 2021November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

Tea Mountain Trail sits just little north of Jinshan on Taiwan's northern coast. This easy walk does exactly what it says on the tin. It's a mountain, and there's tea growing on it. It's perhaps not the most thrilling walk out there, but it's a pleasant walk in a part of Taiwan that I haven't spent nearly enough time in.

FAIRY SHRIMP at XIANGTIAN POOL (向天池的仙女蝦)

September 3, 2021November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

Xiangtian Pool is an ephemeral body of water in an old volcanic crater on the northwestern edge of Yangmingshan National Park. It can be seen after periods of heavy rain, and only then for a brief time. As if this didn't make the pool intriguing enough, it is also home to a population of fairy shrimp which spawn in great numbers when the conditions are just right.

DASHEHU TRAIL (大舌湖健行步道)

August 29, 2021November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

This short and easy trail in New Taipei's Pinglin District is a good choice for a lazy summer afternoon. It meanders along a river, through rows of tea, and takes you down to a pretty suspension bridge.

A WANDER IN KENTING NATIONAL FOREST RECREATION AREA (墾丁國家森林旅樂區)

August 27, 2021November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

Whether your interest lies in rocks, plants, creatures or culture, Kenting National Forest Recreation Area is well worth a visit. Amongst the towering limestone cliffs and subterranean caves you can spot a whole host of cute critters and an impressive array of tropical plant life.

LINGJIAO and WANGGU WATERFALLS (嶺腳瀑布/望古瀑布)

July 30, 2021November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / 4 Comments

The Lingjiao to Wanggu Trail packs an awful lot into its short length. You get not one, but two waterfalls, a dash of history and a trail that’s both pretty and gentle. It’s also short enough that you can combine it with a visit to some of the other sights and trails along the Pingxi Line.

SCISSORS ROCK NIGHT HIKE (剪刀石夜爬)

July 23, 2021November 16, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / 1 Comment

Scissors Rock is up there with Elephant Mountain in terms of its popularity among the easily accessible trails of Taipei. But unlike it's Xinyi District counterpart, this trail in Neihu falls quiet as soon as night settles on the city. Travellers willing to brave the dark will be treated to peaceful city views and maybe even a flying squirrel (or two, or five)

Happy faces all round. I love hiking in Ruifang District. On this occasion, we didn't end up where we had intended because the trail hadn't been walked in too long and had become overgrown to the point of being invisible, but there was still lots of interesting scenery. A shit detective story

Note: Taiwan Trails and Tales has been going for over eight years now, so there are a fair few dead links and bits of information that need updating on the site. If you find one, I would greatly appreciate it if you let me know either by commenting on that post or by dropping me a line in the contact form (on the "About" page) so that I can remove or update it.
