MIAOLI EASY HIKES

PENGLAI FISH WATCHING TRAIL (蓬萊溪護魚步道)

April 4, 2026September 22, 2025 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

This quiet and pretty trail in Miaoli’s Nanzhuang’s Township follows close to a burbling stream populated with abundant shoals of fish, and — if you’re lucky — you might spot muntjacs and monkeys among the lush green foliage.

June 15, 2024December 11, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

This post details one of two options for day 11 on the Raknus Selu Trail. It takes walkers on some lovely trails through the hills of Dahu Township and ends at the touristy Ginger Garden.

RAKNUS SELU DAY 10 (樟之細路D10)

April 27, 2024May 17, 2025 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

Day 10 on the Raknus Selu Trail takes you from quaint Xindian Old Street to Chukuangken: the site of the world's second oldest oil field.

RAKNUS SELU TRAIL DAY 6 (樟之細路D6)

December 9, 2023June 27, 2025 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

Day 6 on the Raknus Selu was a special one. Leaving Beipu behind, the trail climbs towards the border with Miaoli, passing numerous temples along the way. For me, the highlight of this day was watching the sunset from the courtyard in front of Quanhua Temple.

Last year, when I had a chunk of free time and a T-pass, I went on a mission to see how far the 北北基桃 (Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung and Taoyuan) pass would take me and ended up exploring a few spots in Taoyuan’s mountainous Fuxing District that I hadn’t previously been to, among them, Xiaowulai and the hot spring village of Luofu. Yes, it’s a long way, but if you pack a swimming costume, this is a full day out. Guess where. Tung season is currently bringing its white, green and blue colour palette to the hills of northern Taiwan. These photos are from Daqiong Trail in Taoyuan — a popular spot with blossom chasers.

Note: Taiwan Trails and Tales has been going for over eight years now, so there are a fair few dead links and bits of information that need updating on the site. If you find one, I would greatly appreciate it if you let me know either by commenting on that post or by dropping me a line in the contact form (on the "About" page) so that I can remove or update it.
