BATTLESHIP ROCK and PHOENIX MOUNTAIN (軍艦岩/丹鳳山)

May 23, 2026May 23, 2026 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

Battleship Rock is a prominent chunk of sandstone standing out against the skyline of Taipei's Beitou District. There is a complex web of trails criss-crossing the area, so you can climb it ten times in ten different ways, but the route taken here is the one that Taiwan's hikers have voted as being one of the best hikes you can do in Taipei.

Dongman Trail is a unique experience among Taiwan hiking trails in that it connects two of Taiwan's forest recreation areas: Dongyanshan and Manyueyuan. At around 16-17km, it is a relatively long day-hike, but walkers who venture onto this route are treated to picturesque and peaceful forest scenery.

This historic and very accessible trail will take you over the hills from Dali to Fulong next to an inviting river stream. Better yet, you can look forward to a refreshing swim once you have reached your destination.

Patience and luck were required to get this photo. About 2 months ago, this was one of several holes I saw barbets making on the trail where I hike most often. All bar this one were swiftly abandoned. A month later, I heard chicks inside, and now finally I’ve caught sight of one resident. Some Moltrecht’s tree frogs being cute. Last year, when I had a chunk of free time and a T-pass, I went on a mission to see how far the 北北基桃 (Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung and Taoyuan) pass would take me and ended up exploring a few spots in Taoyuan’s mountainous Fuxing District that I hadn’t previously been to, among them, Xiaowulai and the hot spring village of Luofu. Yes, it’s a long way, but if you pack a swimming costume, this is a full day out.

Note: Taiwan Trails and Tales has been going for over eight years now, so there are a fair few dead links and bits of information that need updating on the site. If you find one, I would greatly appreciate it if you let me know either by commenting on that post or by dropping me a line in the contact form (on the "About" page) so that I can remove or update it.
