NORTH COAST AND GUANYINSHAN NATIONAL SCENIC AREA

GUANYIN MOUNTAIN (觀音山)

September 20, 2025September 22, 2025 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

Guanyin Mountain rises from the banks of Tamsui River in New Taipei’s Bali and Wugu Districts. Its nickname is tough guy peak on account of the fact that climbing it was previously used as an entoughenmemt activity for military police officers, and for those unacquainted with Taiwan’s steep, steep steps, it’s clear to see why.

LOVERS’ LAKE ROUND-MOUNTAIN TRAIL (情人湖環山步道)

April 16, 2025April 12, 2025 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

Lovers' Lake is a natural lake in the hills to the north of Keelung. It is encircled by two trails—a shorter and easier one that sticks close to the lakeshore called the Round Lake Trail, and a longer one that takes in more ocean views called the Round Mountain Trail. This post covers the second of those two options.

May 25, 2024December 11, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

Only open for several months every year, Alabao Bay is a short stretch of coastline accessible from within Keelung's Heping Island Park. The coastal trail offers interesting rock formations, views of Keelung Islet, and traces left behind by several waves of inhabitants.

Taoyuan Valley Trail is one of the classic day hikes in northern Taiwan. It offers free-roaming water buffalo and views for days... just be prepared to earn all the enjoyment with plenty of hard work.

Seen in a smallish temple Chishang: a bouquet of rice in place of the usual lilies. Good evening Taipei. This year’s silvergrass season has definitely arrived. These photos were taken at Sanjiaopu Peak (三角埔頂山), a popular New Taipei spot for silvergrass photography, and this week, I’ve also seen photos showing Mount Qixing’s Lengshuikeng Trail, Qingtiangang, and Mount Bangping all covered in the fluffy plumes.

Note: Taiwan Trails and Tales has been going for over eight years now, so there are a fair few dead links and bits of information that need updating on the site. If you find one, I would greatly appreciate it if you let me know either by commenting on that post or by dropping me a line in the contact form (on the "About" page) so that I can remove or update it.
