This looped route takes you deep into the forests of Daxueshan National Forest Recreation Area. Tread quietly, and you might even be rewarded with a sighting of a Formosan serow.

SHUANGLIU WATERFALL TRAIL (雙流瀑布)
Shuangliu Waterfall Trail is one of several trails inside Shuangliu National Forest Recreation Area. It's testament to the prettiness of the park that we had a great time despite never even making it as far as the waterfall itself. The trail is gentle, easy and has a couple of stepping stone trails that are great fun.
RONGXUAN TRAIL (容軒步道)
Rongxuan Trail is a short and easy loop walk right next to Taiwan's northernmost train station.
CROUCHING TIGER HILL (臥虎山)
A brief loop with an interesting temple and some exploration of a lesser known peak in Keelung.
MOUNT DONGYAN (東眼山)
This beautiful trail in Taoyuan's Fuxing District takes you up to the summit of Mount Dongyan via some incredibly pretty forest footpaths.
RAKNUS SELU DAY 3 via BAILING PAVILION (樟之細路D3B)
There are two routes connecting Hsinchu's Guanxi and Hengshan Townships. This one follows small roads and agricultural tracks as it cuts through low hills on its way south.

Day two on the Raknus Selu Trail is the first time that the route takes you off the roads and gets you walking on some of the old trails that crisscross the area's hills.

This first day on the Raknus Selu Trail is a looping wander which starts at Sankeng Old Street before heading down to the banks of the river that once made the area prosperous.
MOUNT NAJIE (那結山)
The trail to Mount Najie offers some fun scrambling up through the tall forests of Taoyuan's Fuxing District. If you're looking for somewhere to escape the crowds, then this is the peak for you.
TIEZHAN SHAN (鐵站山)
Tiezhan Shan is an easy walk with lots in the way of random art/weirdness to distract you from the fact that it’s not much of a walk. This is one of the Minor 100 Peaks that you could bring your gran to.
KEELUNG ISLET (基隆嶼)
Keelung Islet is a small rocky mound just a few kilometres off the coast of northern Taiwan. It is also a great choice for a day trip from the city.
MOUNT DULAN (都蘭山)
For travellers to Taitung, climbing Mount Dulan - or Dugus A Du Lan in the language of the local Amis people - would make a wonderful day trip. The 1,190m peak sits close to the coast in Donghe Township, and on clear days visitors can enjoy views both of the Pacific Ocean, and the East Rift Valley.
HOUDONGKENG WATERFALL (猴洞坑瀑布)
Hidden in the hills below Paoma Historic Trail is the split-level Houdongkeng Falls. This short walk is an easy way to pass an hour or two in Jiaoxi.

Miaoli tends to get overlooked by visitors to Taiwan, but the area has a wealth of wonderful hiking trails for anyone who strays off the beaten path and goes in search of somewhere quiet. Sanyuan Trail is a good example of the kind of unexpected gem that you can enjoy if you visit this part of the world. It's a straightforward ridge hike with views, fun climbs, and a cute little town at either end.
