HENGCHUN CITY WALLS (恆春縣城)

December 31, 2022March 15, 2023 / taiwantrailsandtales / 2 Comments

The old town of Hengchun is one great alternative to Kenting, and the historic city walls provide visitors with the perfect ‘no plan’ day out. Just lace up your shoes and start walking, letting your interest and stomach divert you as necessary.

MOUNT LILONG (里龍山)

November 19, 2022November 22, 2022 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

Mount Lilong is one of the more popular hiking trails in Pingtung County. The climb to this Minor 100 Peak takes you past streams, through pleasant forests full of monkeys and up to a summit which commands spectacular views over the coastline.

The waters around the coast here are full of all sorts of weird and wonderful wildlife, and this makes it popular with divers. Myself, I’m not much of a sea swimmer (much to the eternal despair of my sister, who is half seal). I prefer to paddle. But even close to the water’s edge, you can see all sorts of fascinating sea life. Last year I took several trips to the coastal areas around Keelung and Jinshan. It’s an area I hadn’t previously explored much, despite there being a wealth of trails and interesting sites to explore. The photos in this post and the next two are from Wangyou Valley Trail, one of the best-known walks in the area. Close to the remains of Gongziliao Fort, walkers can find the summit of Mount Gongziliao, an easy one Xiao Bai Yue. At only 162 metres above sea level, it’s not one of Taiwan’s most magnificent peaks, but if you include a trip to see the first, this is a great half-day outing.
