4 Spectacular Waterfall Hikes Along the Historic Pingxi Railway in Taiwan

The Pingxi Railway is a scenic railway line that runs through the countryside of northeastern Taiwan. The line is known for its lush greenery, charming villages, and stunning waterfalls. In addition to being a popular tourist destination, the Pingxi Line is also a great place to go hiking, and—thanks to the region’s steep hills—many of those hikes will bring walkers to towering waterfalls.

Below, you’ll find brief introductions to several walks with waterfalls that can be accessed along the Pingxi Line.

Menghuan Falls

Menghuan Waterfall, also known as Dream Falls, is a secluded waterfall located in the hills near the Pingxi Line in Taiwan. The trail to the waterfall is about 3.5km long and takes 1.5–2 hours to complete. The hike is considered easy for experienced hikers but may be more challenging for beginners due to some steps and slippery sections. The waterfall is a great spot to visit in the summer as it is one of the quieter falls in the area.

Youkeng Waterfall

The Youkeng Waterfall trail is a 6.5–7.5km hike that takes about 3¼ hours to complete. The trail is moderately difficult, with slippery and rough sections. Hikers should wear sturdy footwear and take their time on the slippery parts of the trail. The falls themselves are a stunning, multi-layered affair that can be found just beside the Pingxi Line tracks.
