Climbing Taoyuan's Mount Xizhou—one of Taiwan's 100 Minor Peaks—is a pleasant half-day adventure on the northern edge of Shimen Reservoir. The shady trail winds up through a series of forest clearings and is a popular exercise spot for local retirees.

Mount Data, also known as Ta Shan or Big Ta Mountain, is the highest of Taiwan's 100 minor peaks, standing 2,663 meters above sea level. It offers a fun walk for both new and regular hikers with beautiful forest scenery and spectacular views of layered mountains from the summit.

MOUNT WANREN and SIXTY STONE MOUNTAIN (萬人山/六十石山)

July 6, 2024December 11, 2024 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

Mount Wanren is an easy Xiao Bai Yue in the south of Hualien County. Although the climb to the summit is short, if you time your trip right, you can combine it with a visit to the spectacular daylily fields on the nearby slopes of Sixty Stone Mountain.

The ridgeline behind New Taipei’s Zhonghe District is crisscrossed with a network of trails where you can find all kinds of small shrines, statues and other interesting sights. One that I’d been interested in exploring for a while was the one that started from Yuantong Temple. I’d been drawn to it by the “thread of sky” feature — a path that cuts straight through a narrow gap between rocks, but as the pictures attest, it also held plenty more interesting details to make the trip worth my while. Alishan, Shuishan Giant Tree Trail. Living in Taipei, it can be easy to take the beauty on my doorstep for granted. In fact, when I headed for Qixing Mountain yesterday, my main objective was exercise, but just look at this gorgeous scenery. The landscape has so many faces to share, even on a single day.

Note: Taiwan Trails and Tales has been going for over eight years now, so there are a fair few dead links and bits of information that need updating on the site. If you find one, I would greatly appreciate it if you let me know either by commenting on that post or by dropping me a line in the contact form (on the "About" page) so that I can remove or update it.
