TUNG BLOSSOM TRAILS

FIREFLIES and TUNG BLOSSOM in PINGLIN RIVERSIDE PARK

April 11, 2026October 27, 2025 / taiwantrailsandtales / Leave a comment

The four weeks spanning the end of April and the start of May is peak season for fireflies in northern Taiwan. What's more, this time of year also happens to be tung blossom season, and this easy trail in New Taipei's Pinglin District gives you the opportunity to experience both in one go.

The trail is located in the very northernmost tip of Taiwan, and is a short (slightly hilly) walk with lots of tung trees and some terraced rice paddies to enjoy.

This short trail in Hsinchu is a good place to do a spot of tung blossom viewing. What makes it even more appealing is that the walk starts and finishes at sleepy Hukou Old Street, where you can enjoy a few Hakka dishes and/or a cup of coffee.

Guess where. Tung season is currently bringing its white, green and blue colour palette to the hills of northern Taiwan. These photos are from Daqiong Trail in Taoyuan — a popular spot with blossom chasers. Although I’m dreading the return of summer temperatures and mosquitoes, this time of year is one I look forward to — it brings fireflies and tung blossom. I haven't been out on any firefly-watching expeditions yet, but in anticipation of the season, I've just added a new trail guide to the Taiwan Trails and Tales site. It covers a popular firefly viewing spot that I visited last year.

Note: Taiwan Trails and Tales has been going for over eight years now, so there are a fair few dead links and bits of information that need updating on the site. If you find one, I would greatly appreciate it if you let me know either by commenting on that post or by dropping me a line in the contact form (on the "About" page) so that I can remove or update it.
